Camp Spotlight: Camp Quest New England Weekend
Get to know Camp Quest New England
by Azure Hansen, Assistant Camp Director CQ New England
Camp Quest New England is happy to be among the newest of Camp Quest locations. We will be holding a weekend camp this July in Connecticut on the lovely Long Island Sound. We’ll be staying on the campus of Connecticut College, which allows us access to some great facilities, including a 750 acre arboretum, pool, sporting equipment, and (hopefully!) advanced science equipment.
Our camp director is a middle school teacher and published children’s book author, poet and cartoonist. He visited Camp Quest Chesapeake for a few days last year and the campers (and staff) there simply adored him. Most of our staff is involved with humanist groups in Connecticut, which is how this alliance to start a Camp Quest in New England was formed. Many of our staff have many years of summer camp experience, and our two staff members from New York state were part of Camp Quest Chesapeake’s inaugural session. We have diverse interests and careers that we will put to use at camp.
Our goal this year is to get the word out about Camp Quest New England, and to develop a solid core of staff so we can expand to a full week in 2013. Of course, we will also give campers a memorable and meaningful weekend of fun, friends and freethought!
While our weekend camp will be short, it will be packed with activities that fit with Camp Quest’s mission - as well as time for the kids to just enjoy each other’s company. We’re planning an orienteering scavenger hunt, code-breaking, a water carnival, cartooning, a constellation mythology hike, engineering competitions, low ropes cooperative games, nature walks, Socrates Cafe and more. (If you have program ideas, please let us know!)
We are excited to bring Camp Quest to New England, and we hope you can join us this July. Help us spread the word about Camp Quest New England - tell your friends in Boston, New York City and all the charming small towns in New England.
