Dawkins Tour Wraps Up With Camp Quest Stop

Camp Quest Michigan and Richard Dawkins

Well, the US leg of the Magic of Reality tour has come to a close, but not before an awesome Camp Quest stop in Michigan! Camp Quest Michigan worked with the Birmingham Temple for Humanistic Judaism in Farmington Hills, Michigan to create an awesome event with Dr. Dawkins, science experiments, and ice cream!

The event filled up quickly as the doors opened. People of all ages filed in, all eager to see Richard Dawkins and spend the day with fellow freethinkers. The reserved seats were saved for the children, giving them front-row access to Richard Dawkins. During his speech, Dr. Dawkins often asked the kids if they knew the answers to certain questions, and their quick responses surprised the crowd! Dr. Dawkins also opened the floor to questions from the young members of the crowd. The questions covered a range of topics including the evolution of the brain, life on other planets, and the future of human evolution.

After about thirty minutes of questions, the kids went to watch a presention by Mad Science in another room, while the older members of the crowd had a question and answer session with Dr. Dawkins. The Mad Science show taught kids about chemical and physical properties, air pressure, and other scientific concepts using engaging demonstrations!

Wayne State Student explaining an experiment

It wouldn't be a Camp Quest event if kids didn't get a chance to get their hands dirty and try out some of what they learned.  That's where the Wayne State Secular Student Alliance came in! The students gave up their Saturday to help run hands-on science experiments! It was a great experience for the kids to see cool college students who were interested in science.  For the college students, it was great opportunity to get experience working with kids and showing how fun science can be.  And who knows, maybe some of the students will be Camp Quest counselors this summer.

Of course, the day wasn't complete until everyone got an ice cream-- or two! :)

Once again, we extend our thanks to the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science for making this possible, and to Camp Quest Michigan for running such a great event!
